Peggy Thompson Publication Awards

Purpose: The Peggy Thompson Publication Awards are designed to recognize and encourage high standards of achievement in publishing biological information and in conveying an understanding of the concepts and application of biological sciences.

Categories: One award is given annually in each of three categories:

  • Scientific papers published in professional, refereed journals;
  • Biological technical reports; and
  • Publications and/or other media (eg. videos) communicating biological information to the general public.

Conditions:

  • Open to all members of the ASPB except members of the Board of Directors.
  • Eligible members may nominate a publication/production by any eligible member, including themselves.
  • If the publication has joint or multiple authorship, the member nominated need not be the senior author.
  • In the case of non-print media, the member must have made a substantial contribution to the biological content of the production.
  • The author must have been an ASPB member at the time of the publication/production.
  • Three copies of the nominated material must be forwarded to the Board of Directors.
  • The publication date must be within two years prior to the closing date (December 31 each year). Publications/ productions will be judged by the following criteria:
    • Contribution to the field of biology
    • Originality
    • Technical merit, and
    • Professionalism in conduct of study and writing/production of the nominated material.

Award: Certificate of merit.

Dr. J.D. Soper Award

Purpose: To recognize those who have made outstanding contributions in the field of biology.

Conditions: The recipient must be a Canadian biologist, be nominated by two ASPB members, and receive unanimous consent of the ASPB Board of Directors.

Award: An honorary life membership in the ASPB.

Science fair awards

Purpose: To stimulate an interest in biology among Alberta students.

Conditions: To be awarded at the Calgary and Edmonton Regional Science fairs to the participant with the best entry in the biological field.

Award: Plaque of recognition.
