Guidelines Released for Lower Athabasca Regional Council
The Lower Athabasca Regional Advisory Council (RAC) now has direction on developing a plan under the Land-use Framework. The Lower Athabasca Region covers northeast Alberta and includes the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, including Fort McMurray.
Terms of reference for the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan released July 31 outline potential levels of production from the oil sands, and identify provincial policies and guidelines that will be integrated into the regional plan.
The advisory council will look at implications of different levels of oil sands production, including effects on the air, biodiversity, land and water; communities’ population growth and labour force needs; and the effect on the forestry industry; options for increasing the amount of conservation areas securing boreal forest in the region; options for developing the recreation and tourism industry; the general location of transportation and utility corridors; and impacts of development on Aboriginal communities.
