Description
Join us for a social event downtown. Meet some of your fellow members and learn from our speaker, Kimberly Dawe.
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have expanded their range into northern boreal habitats. In Alberta, Canada, population increase and expansion of white-tailed deer has already been linked to increased wolf abundance and elevated predation on threatened caribou populations. Northern ungulates face winter tradeoffs between minimizing energy expenditure and maximizing acquisition of potentially limited food resources. Hence, warming climate, which may reduce energy expended, land use change, which can increase food resources, or both may facilitate range expansion through higher winter survival and reproduction. Research was collected to determine the effects of climate change, energy sector footprint, and habitat patterns on white-tailed deer expansion. Kim will discuss the findings of this research.
