Description

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have expanded their range into northern boreal habitats. In Alberta, Canada, population increase and expansion of white-tailed deer has already been linked to increased wolf abundance and elevated predation on threatened caribou populations. Northern ungulates face winter tradeoffs between minimizing energy expenditure and maximizing acquisition of potentially limited food resources. Hence, warming climate, which may reduce energy expended, land use change, which can increase food resources, or both may facilitate range expansion through higher winter survival and reproduction.

White-tailed deer select for areas with higher linear feature density in peatland dominated areas and have more fawns than expected. Associations with changing winter severity are varied on short time scales; however a trend toward less severe winters is evident in some wildlife management units.
