AECOM is looking for applicants for the position of an intermediate Terrestrial Ecologist in our Red Deer office. This role could also be based out of Edmonton. Individuals should have a minimum of five years of consulting experience, and a strong background conducting biological inventories, environmental impact assessments, and a variety of natural resource planning projects. Writing and other communication skills, organizational skills and an ability to work well under tight deadlines, are essential qualities. The position will require fieldwork throughout western and northern Canada. Position Description: Working directly with project managers to provide support on environmental investigations including biophysical investigations, environmental impact assessments, pre-disturbance assessments, conservation and reclamation plans, and related scopes of work. This position will also involve some project management. Key roles for the position include: Leading field crews and managing all aspects of field projects (including technical and administrative tasks); Design and perform field investigations to describe forest or prairie soils and plant communities according to study requirements; Maintain effective communication with clients and staff; Supervise and organize field crews; Adhere to and enforce corporate and client health and safety protocols; Interpret results of investigations and integrate results with additional biophysical data; and Write effective reports in a scientific style. Direct Qualifications: Bachelor-level degree in agriculture, environmental and/or natural sciences from a recognized University with major in Botany or Soil Science and a minimum of 5+ years experience required; Professional designation or eligibility for registration with Alberta Society of Professional Biologists and/or Alberta Institute of Agrologists; Experience with vegetation, soils and general EA legislation in western Canada, including provincial and federal regulatory requirements and agencies (e.g., ERCB, NEB and CEAA). Understanding of boreal forest and grassland ecology, with demonstrated experience in the application and interpretation of ecological land classification systems, particularly those of Alberta and British Columbia. Knowledge and use of Canadian System of Soil Classification, Manual for Describing Soils in the Field and soil survey procedures; Experience preparing technical reports such as Environmental Impact Assessments, Pre Disturbance Assessments and Conservation and Reclamation Plans; Assets: Knowledge and experience identifying flora and plant community ecology, including taxonomy and species identification; Experience with air photo interpretation (hard/soft copy), Global Positioning Systems, and map and compass orientation; Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are assets; Proficiency in use of various research tools, strong ability to write scientifically, and capability to organize and communicate with peers, managers and clients; Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently; Ability to work in both field and office environments.
