The Opportunity:

The successful applicant would develop, lead and deliver an innovative environmental program focusing on ecological health by establishing long-term research plots and benchmarking reclamation efforts within the Eagle Point â?? Blue Rapids Park System.

The Parks Council:

The Eagle Point â?? Blue Rapids Parks Council was incorporated in April 2008 as a registered non-profit society to:

  • Undertake public consultation and develop management plans for the recently designated Eagle Point Provincial Park and Blue Rapids Provincial Recreation Area totalling over 56 km2 along the Brazeau County section of the North Saskatchewan River, near Drayton Valley;
  • Facilitate ongoing collaboration among community-based organizations in the planning, development and operation of park recreational and tourism facilities within the Provincial Park and Provincial Recreation Area; and
  • Meet other environmental protection, recreation and sustainable economic development and tourism objectives associated with theses protected areas

The Eagle Point â?? Blue Rapids Parks Council is comprised of 16 organizational members; including Alberta Parks, Brazeau County, The Town of Drayton Valley, local outdoor recreation organizations, adjacent landowners, industry and environmental organizations. The Parks Council works in partnership with Alberta Parks with delegated roles and responsibilities formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2008.

The Position:

The Science and Reclamation Coordinator will be responsible for the establishment and implementation of a comprehensive field research and monitoring program for the Eagle Point â?? Blue Rapids Park System including:

*The development, coordination and implementation of long-term environmental field research and monitoring plan

  • Designing and performing field investigations to describe forest soils, plant communities and wildlife species
  • Inventorying and prioritizing reclamation sites and future reclamation efforts
  • Developing an environmental and water quality long-term monitoring program

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Degree or diploma in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Ecology, Soil Science or related discipline
  • Professional designation or eligibility for registration with Alberta Society of Professional Biologists and/or Alberta Institute of Agrologists
  • Familiarity with Albertaâ??s Land Use Framework and the Plan for Parks
  • Experience with conservation, environmental stewardship and project implementation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ecosystem restoration and provincial reclamation legislation
  • Knowledge and experience identifying flora, including taxonomy and species identification
  • Experience with vegetation, soils and general EA legislation in Alberta
  • Understanding of forest ecology with demonstrated experience in the application and interpretation of ecological land classification systems.
  • Knowledge and use of Canadian System of Soil Classification
  • Experience with air photo interpretation (hard/soft copy), Global Positioning Systems, and map and compass orientation;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong ability to provide leadership and supervision with strong oral and written communication skills
