This position is responsible for acting as a resource for environmental programming in Red Deer, which includes conducting research, developing and implementing programs, communicating environmental messages, and responding to inquiries.
Job Requirements:
- Two year diploma in an environmentally related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum of 2 years experience in program creation and/or working in an environmentally related field
- Valid Class 5 drivers license
- In addition to the 9 Core Competencies identified for all employees of the City of Red Deer (Ethics & Values, Service Focus, Thinking, Planning & Organizing, Leadership, Development, Communication & Interaction, Adaptability & Change Management, Understanding the Municipal Political Environment), the following are specific to this position:
- Demonstrated strong attention to detail, well organized self starter and proven ability to coordinate work tasks in a fast paced environment with changing priorities
- Demonstrated experience conducting research, writing reports and presenting results.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with staff and the public including handing conflict
- Demonstrated public speaking ability and presentation skills
- Ability to represent The City and the Environmental Services Department to the public, the media, stakeholder groups and other governments.
- Ability to work individually or as part of a team
- Ability to translate technical concepts into lay terminology
- Knowledge of environmental initiative research methods, program development and effective public consultation methods
- Computer operation skills (including knowledge of Microsoft Office, database management, etc)
Specific Demands of the Job
- Demand on leisure time.
- PPE includes safety footwear, hard hat, safety vest and gloves
- Attendance required at meetings and public events outside of regular office hours
- This position works primarily in an office setting, however may periodically require working outdoors, e.g. at public events, the Farmer’s Market, etc.
- This position requires a high degree of working independently and periods of concentrated focus conducting in-depth research into complicated and potentially controversial subjects.
- Failure to fulfil obligations could negatively impact co-workers, committees, City Council and the public’s perception of The City.
Affiliation: CUPE
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, based on 37.5 hours per week. Required to work some evenings and weekends.
