Junior Environmental Scientist/Technician

Bear Tracks Environmental Services (2015) Ltd. is seeking a junior environmental scientist/technician to join our fast growing team for a contract position in Lethbridge, AB. Founded as a biological consulting firm in 2006, Bear Tracks’ experience portfolio has since grown to include an array of environmental consulting services, allowing us to meet the various needs of our industry and government clientele.

The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for conducting and assisting with data management objectives, technical writing, desktop assessments and background research, and assisting with completion of field work of varying disciplines. Experience in one or more of these fields is an asset, however on the job training will also be provided. Proficiency with word and excel is a must.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
• Support field staff with various projects.
• Compile and analyze data from various field programs.
• Support the writing of technical reports.
• Provide updates to senior staff as to the progress of various field programs.

Candidates will have the following qualifications and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma in wildlife biology, zoology, environmental science, or related discipline.
• Minimum 1 years of experience in the environmental field, with some of that experience preferably gained from a consulting background.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Currently registered as a P.Biol. or BIT, or eligible for registration as a Professional Biologist in Alberta.
• Highly motivated and organized. Organization is key as you will be responsible for working on various projects concurrently.
• Ability to read a map and use a GPS. It seems simple but some people lack this skill.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence, H2S Alive, TDG, ATV safe rider, and First Aid are required. If you don’t have any of these currently, we can work on getting them for you.

Assets for the position include:
• ArcGIS knowledge
• Vegetation identification skills
• Soil classification
• Experience with wetland assessments
• Experience with fish and fish habitat assessments
• Experience with Detailed Site Assessments
• Experience completing Phase I and/or Phase II environmental site assessments
• Able to think critically and utilize problem solving skills
• Ability to work independently and in a team setting
• Willingness to work remote

This position will run from Jan 1st to Aug 31st, with the possibility of an extension depending on staffing needs. Bear Tracks offers a competitive salary (commensurate with experience) and flexible work hours. Preference will be given to candidates based in the Lethbridge area or who are willing to relocate to Lethbridge for the duration of this contract.
