Basin Environmental Ltd. is an environmental consulting company based out of Sherwood Park & Calgary, Alberta. Basin offers environmental services to a diverse client base including oil and gas, transportation, land development, real-estate and telecommunication groups.

Currently we have an immediate opening for the following position: Intermediate Soil Scientist based out of Basin’s Sherwood Park or Calgary office.

Under the general supervision of the senior staff, this position is responsible for completing fieldwork associated with various projects throughout Alberta. Key responsibilities include providing intermediate technical advice and review of soil related matters for our team. This role will require onsite environmental monitoring of construction including hands-on service to our clients, ensuring high quality project work and approaches are utilized to provide efficient and timely solutions for a variety of projects. This role will support the development of our Soils discipline.

Key responsibilities include:
• Coordinating, directing and conducting soil-discipline related project teams and work
• Mentoring and training junior soils staff
• Assist with developing and implementing erosion control plans
• Describe soils according to the Canadian Soil Classification System for soil surveys
• Sample, map, and analyze soils using accepted protocols under the Canadian Soil Classification System
• Complete Phase 1 and Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessments
• Data compilation and management
• Interpreting data for various end-uses
• Preparing and reviewing reports, proposals and presentations
• Work in a team environment with other disciplines and mentor junior staff


• Post-secondary education in natural resource management or environmental sciences. A graduate degree (M.Sc.) in an environmental science related discipline would be an asset.
• Professional designation or professional affiliation with Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA).
• A minimum of 3-8 years of work-related experience.
• Thorough understanding of Alberta reclamation and remediation guidelines.
• Knowledge of planning, land-use and environmental regulations/policies.
• Experience with vegetation and wetlands would be an asset.
• Strong knowledge of geospatial informational systems (GIS).
• Strong data analysis and technical reporting skills.
• Strong communication and scientific writing skills.
• A valid driver's licence and clean driving record is required.


• Depending on experience salary would range from $58,240 ($28/hr) to $108,160 ($52/hr)


• All hired candidates will be eligible for a signing bonus of $4,000 to $7,000 depending on experience. This will be negotiated in the offer of employment.
