Intermediate Wildlife Biologist/Ecologist

Spencer Environmental Management Services Ltd. has an immediate opening for a highly motivated, versatile wildlife biologist/ecologist to join our team. This position is: permanent, full-time, salaried, based in Edmonton. Start date to be negotiated with successful candidate.

In this position you can expect to use your wildlife and ancillary skills to:
• design and conduct wildlife field programs
• characterize project area habitat and wildlife resources (desktop and field-based)
• assess development-related wildlife impacts and develop mitigation measures
• perform nest searches and wildlife sweeps
• contribute to EIA preparation
• manage and analyse data, prepare technical reports
• assist with project management

You can be described as possessing:
- an M.Sc. in zoology, ecology, conservation biology, or a related discipline and at least three years of consulting experience, or equivalencies
- strong wildlife identification skills (aural, visual, sign)
- experience conducting wildlife surveys, including breeding bird surveys
- experience working independently in field settings
- familiarity with Alberta landscapes, fauna, including boreal, parkland, and prairie regions
- knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation and regulations
- demonstrated strong writing skills
- strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with others, including scientists, regulators, engineers, construction personnel
- ability to think critically, solve challenging problems, manage time effectively and adapt to flexible work conditions and hours
- P. Biol. accreditation or eligibility to register as a Professional Biologist in Alberta
- a strong desire to contribute to science-based environmental management and successful project delivery as an integrated team member

You must be:
- eligible to work in Canada (i.e., Canadian citizen, Canadian permanent resident)
- eligible to hold a valid Class 5 driver’s license, with no restrictions

This position involves:
• flexible work hours but occasional long days
• approximately 40:60 field to office ratio
• short-term travel to project sites; does not involve long stints in the field so you can anticipate spending evenings and weekends how you choose
• some WFH opportunity
• opportunity for mentoring by seasoned, senior P. Biols.
