CPP Environmental is currently seeking an Intermediate to Senior Aquatic Environmental Specialist to join our growing team of professionals. CPP Environmental provides environmental consulting services for the Alberta market, specializing in land, water, and natural resource management. With expertise in the design and use of government policy and regulatory systems, CPP works with clients to develop industry-leading solutions tailored to the unique needs of each situation. • Collaborating with a well-rounded team of like-minded individuals that includes senior regulatory advisors (Water Act, Public Lands Act, municipal), junior to senior aquatic ecologists, junior to senior wildlife biologists, and junior to senior environmental inspectors. • Working on the assessment and permitting side with a variety of professional engineering firms to complete aquatic assessments and environmental protection plans to guide sustainable construction activities.
• Working on the regulatory assurance side with construction companies to ensure that environmental features are protected during construction. We work on some of the largest construction projects in the province, and thus, there will be ample opportunities for growth. These projects involve many different facets, including care of water, wildlife management, vegetation management, and erosion and sediment control (ESC). Examples include the Springbank Off-stream Reservoir Project, large bridge projects in the Peace Region and Edmonton area and a multitude of crossing projects throughout Alberta.

We are seeking an individual who wants to be a leader, is highly motivated, independent, and committed to working with a diverse group of environmental staff. The Aquatic Environmental Specialist will coordinate day-to-day operating matters related to planning and environmental services in collaboration with, and with the direction of, the Operations Director to provide deliverables to clients that are on time and budget. The daily work scope will be a combination of project management, field lead/supervision, and writing technical reports for a variety of clients and service areas. The Specialist will lead a variety of projects, including fish and wildlife assessments, environmental risk assessments, Environmental Construction Operations (ECO) Plan development, construction supervision and environmental monitoring, fish rescue, water quality sampling, riparian assessments, and the development and implementation of watercourse reclamation/restoration projects. We are seeking individuals with the following primary experience and interests:
• Managing client files and projects. Be the direct point of contact with clients and provide high quality of service by being responsive and amenable to project needs.
• Ensure a quality product is delivered and the client is satisfied with services and needs are met.
• Acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the applicable area of expertise.
• Providing technical direction to staff and clients.
• Technical and professional writing (editing, proof reading and quality control on formal submissions and external documentation). Ensure a quality product is delivered.
• Engage in administrative duties including contributing to the preparation of proposals.
• Fish sampling including electrofishing.
• Vegetation, bird, wildlife, amphibian, and fish identification.
• Wetland delineation.
• Environmental monitoring during construction.
• Following Health, Safety and Environmental Policies, Programs etc. in support of safe workplaces.
• Conduct project tasks within budgets. Ensure the closing out of projects and checking that project tasks are complete.
• Provide project reports and updates for external and internal purposes, as requested.
• Provide mentorship to junior staff. Help them grow as professionals.
• Be an integral part of the CPP team.
The ideal candidate will effectively use their diverse background of skills and experience to successfully work with the CPP Environmental team and stakeholders in developing high quality services and products to our clients. Attributes of the ideal candidate are as follows:
• Highly motivated and an independent learner with a desire to be involved in the Natural Sciences field.
• Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
• Possess a post-secondary degree or diploma in an environmental science.
• Be eligible for membership with either the College of Alberta Professional Foresters, College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologists, Alberta Institute of Agrologists, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, or Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.
• A valid Alberta driver’s license.
• Be willing and proficient in conducting field work, which can sometimes be in remote locations.
• Excellent work ethic and ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
• Good problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
• Understand and determine the applicability of relevant provincial and federal government regulations.
• Strong professional writing skills (writing, editing, proof reading).
• Excellent time management skills.
• Strong project management skills - ability to track and administer workflows and provide updates relative to project requirements.
• Strong people skills – ability to work collaboratively with co-workers and clients to ensure that environmental regulations are followed.
• Technical abilities in the areas of study design, field sampling protocols, data analysis and report preparation and review.
• Proven knowledge in aquatic ecosystem assessment and management.
• Working knowledge of sediment and erosion control techniques, technologies, and practices.
• Experience with wetland assessments will be considered an asset.
• Experience with wildlife assessments will be considered an asset.
