This is a permanent, full-time opportunity for the position of Junior Biologist or Environmental Specialist, supporting our EDI Calgary team on various projects throughout Alberta, including post-construction wildlife monitoring for wind and solar projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
• Conduct/ assist with various field surveys including aquatic or terrestrial components of baseline inventories, effects assessments and/or environmental monitoring, as appropriate
• Conduct post-construction wildlife monitoring surveys
• Conduct/assist with data entry, analysis and technical reporting
• Support other staff/projects within EDI
• Participate proactively in EDI’s health and safety program
We are looking for someone with:
• The desire to grow their career in an established, employee-owned company
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and time management skills
• The capacity to work independently in a dynamic environment with intermediate/ senior support, as appropriate
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy, coupled with enthusiasm for continual improvement
• The ability to safely conduct fieldwork in remote locations for extended periods (e.g., two weeks), walk long distances and operate OHVs under a variety of weather conditions
Job requirements include:
• Technical diploma, BSc or MSc degree in biology, environmental science or related discipline(s)
• Registration or eligibility for registration as a BIT (Alberta Society of Professional Biologists) or AIT (Alberta Institute of Agrologists) or similar
• Previous experience through employment, co-op work term or field courses in any of the following would be an asset:
- Soil classification, terrain and land use
- Vegetation, including wetland assessments, weed surveys and rare plant surveys
- Avian identification, including breeding bird surveys
- Wildlife surveys and habitat assessments
- Erosion and sediment control
- Environmental monitoring of construction
- Fish and fish habitat assessments
• Class 5 driver’s licence
