Provincial Riparian Specialist: Deadline to apply - January 20, 2019
Cows and Fish is looking to fill a provincial position, to work with partners and support our other staff at regional or local levels. A self-directed, and motivated person will:
• Provide leadership and support to our staff through expertise in riparian ecology and range science
• Provide provincial and limited regional support to watershed / stewardship / community groups, landowners, resource agencies regarding riparian ecology and management
• Take on a leading role in coordinating and implementing provincial level priorities and projects, collaborating with partners, and securing and reporting on funding, travelling extensively to do so.
• Deliver outreach on riparian ecology and land uses, to partners, communities and landowners.
In a nutshell: we need someone with strong riparian scientific expertise who is very effective at working with people and partners, who can share their passion to motivate and improve voluntary riparian stewardship efforts through strategic partnerships and collaboration, is willing to travel and is looking for a great group of people to work with for many years to come.
Familiarity with riparian and range ecology, riparian health evaluation methods, vegetation community interactions, plant identification, soils, computers and photography required. Experience working with agricultural and conservation organizations, community groups and landowners valued. Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills are expected for scientific and non-scientific audiences, in addition to being familiar with potential partners and having strong networking and collaborating skills. Social media use, website design or maintenance experience are an asset and experience writing funding proposals valued. Experience with GIS, databases and relevant applied scientific research valued. Education or experience related to other riparian related sciences is required, and may include hydrology, wildlife, fisheries, species at risk, wetland classification, restoration or other areas. Practical knowledge in riparian planning or watershed prioritization, restoration or grazing management, and project design / management are expected. Experience including budgeting, grant securement and reporting to funders or partners highly valued. Candidates must have a valid class 5 driver’s license, be willing to do extensive travel (with long days), overnight away from home and do some work outdoors in a field setting. You will have a B.Sc. with a major related to environmental science, conservation or range ecology; those with graduate work preferred. Eligibility for P. Ag. (Alberta Institute of Agrologists) or P. Biol. (Alberta Society of Professional Biologists) required. The successful candidate must have a minimum of 3 years of practical experience in community engagement, education / extension, riparian management or relevant research; candidates with under 5 years of experience will need to make a strong case of their suitability.
