About the speakers: Donna & Don co-author the blog, Beyond Polarity (beyondpolarity.blog), two people from two different worlds who come together to deepen our understanding of Alberta’s narratives, challenges & opportunity:
DONNA KENNEDY-GLANS is a Calgary-based lawyer, writer, and veteran of the world of energy & politics. This work includes decades as a deal-maker & executive to Canadian & global energy companies on the ground in 35 jurisdictions; authoring a book for business on why & how to manage beyond compliance with rules & laws; several Government of Alberta governance roles including ministerial responsibility for electricity & renewable energy; leading an initiative to gather Albertans’ perspectives on energy & climate to deliver in Paris at COP21.
DON HILL is an Edmonton-based broadcaster, writer, and digital media producer. His many television documentaries have been broadcast around the world. A former host of CBC Radio One’s Tapestry, and presenter of numerous documentaries on IDEAS, Don also enjoyed a long association with CKUA Radio Network. His most recent production, Special Places: Writing-On-Stone is an immersive 360 video/VR (virtual reality) presentation for full-dome screens and VR headsets; it’s screened at planetariums in Europe and North America.
The talk: We believe Alberta is about more than infrastructure. Our province needs a narrative, a story that we all believe in. Right now our infrastructure is lacking and so too our narrative & hence our identity.
We’ll talk about the state of Alberta’s narrative: The confusing & conflicting anecdotes, our blindspots, the lack of a single compelling story, and implications for 2019 elections. And we’ll explore the antidote to our dilemma. Like a flu vaccine, you have to prick people with a little poison if you want them to be strong in times of crisis.
We don’t want to spoil the vaccine; you will have to come to the talk to learn more.
