Your Opportunity

Our Alberta Environmental Services group has an opportunity for an experienced Biologist to join our Aquatics team, initially supporting as a Crew Lead for a major capital project in Alberta over the summer. Opportunity exists to support technical deliverables primarily following field season.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, plan, and lead fish salvage and/or water quality field programs
  • Lead fish and fish habitat field assessments
  • Prepare and lead junior staff in field activities
  • Work in remote locations for up to two weeks at a time
  • Manage tasks according to approved scopes of work
  • Understand recent and existing practices and techniques for sampling and analysis of fisheries, fish habitat and water quality data from streams, rivers and lakes
  • Participate in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work
  • Contribute technical guidance to the field team by providing supervision, training, technical direction, and mentoring to more junior staff
  • Support preparation of technical documents (e.g., QAES reports, environmental assessments, Request for Review)
  • Support preparation and development of scopes and budgets

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Proven technical, communication, and organization skills
  • Knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirements
  • Familiarity with freshwater ecology in Alberta and fish identification knowledge
  • Experience conducting fish inventories and fish habitat assessments
  • Experience collecting field data using digital data collection platforms is an asset
  • Experience leading construction monitoring programs
  • Preparation of technical reports and regulatory submissions (e.g., COP notifications, Request for Review, SARA permit applications)
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Capable of working with and guiding clients and contractors
  • Manages and prioritizes time when executing multiple parallel objectives
  • Able to deal with changing conditions and priorities while in the field
  • Thrives in an environment with diverse and dynamic projects, and enjoys working on multi-disciplinary scopes of work
  • Proficient technical writer

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biology (or technical equivalent) is preferred
  • Professional accreditation (i.e., P.Biol, R.P.Bio, R.B.Tech) required
  • Ability to be designated as a QAES
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an aquatic biologist, with experience in freshwater systems in Alberta
  • An electrofishing certificate and experience is an asset
  • Swiftwater rescue and practical ice safety training are assets
  • Required experience in:
  • following health and safety protocols for field programs
  • leading field crews in the execution of fish salvage or water quality field programs
  • working on remote field programs

Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
