Are you looking to…

  • Provide technical support in terrestrial and wildlife focused projects
  • Conduct risk assessments based on the interpretation and analysis of field data

As an Intermediate Wildlife Biologist, you will join on of our Alberta offices as part of our Western Ecology team. The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of projects with responsibilities as follows:

  • Active participation in maintaining Matrix’s strong safety culture
  • Work with senior technical advisors to develop and execute varied wildlife programs which would include:
    • Prepare pre-field planning for projects (e.g., safety planning, mapping preparation, equipment preparation) following Matrix Standards
    • Lead the field portion of projects in accordance with Matrix Standard Operating Safety and Technical Procedures
    • Conduct wildlife surveys with a focus on breeding bird, nest sweep, acoustic recording unit and camera deployment surveys, wildlife sweeps, amphibian surveys and species at risk
    • Complete data entry from field surveys and data analysis (e.g., remote camera photo and acoustic recording unit analysis)
    • Provide field data QA/QC and initial interpretation of field data
    • Work with technical advisors to prepare field summary reports and contribute to the preparation of technical reports
    • Collaborate with other disciplines including vegetation, soil, and aquatics on field programs and reporting
  • Organize cost estimates and work plans for technical wildlife scopes of work
  • Provide technical support in terrestrial wildlife ecology, including study design, application of field techniques, statistical analysis and reporting. Projects include: environmental impact assessments, habitat assessments, mitigation and monitoring programs, and biophysical assessments
  • Write and review a variety of reports
  • Interpretation and analysis of data with purpose to assess impacts and risks. Projects include: caribou restoration program development and reporting, wildlife monitoring program analysis, biophysical impact assessments, environmental evaluations, and environmental assessments

What We Are Looking For

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree(s) in biology, ecology, or environmental science
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in wildlife assessments and related report preparation
  • Wildlife survey experience in one or more of the following: breeding bird, nest sweep, acoustic recording unit and camera deployment surveys, wildlife sweeps, and amphibian surveys
  • An emphasis will be put on candidates with demonstrated bird identification skills
  • Be a member of Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
  • Vegetation identification and wetland experience are considered an asset
  • Strong safety mindset
  • Able to perform field work over extended periods of time
  • Experience with remote work including helicopter work and off highway vehicles
  • Effective organizational, writing and communication skills
  • Function effectively as part of a collaborative team
  • Experience with wildlife and impact assessment legislation and regulatory agencies in Western Canada (across Canada is beneficial)
  • Analytical skills applicable to data analysis, study design and statistical analysis of environmental data
  • Experience with spill response assessments, monitoring and risk management planning
