Maskwa Environmental Consulting Ltd. (Maskwa) is an Alberta owned and operated professional consulting firm based in Calgary, Alberta. We are searching for an Authenticating Wetland Professional (with designation) to join our growing team.
We specialize in planning, permitting, strategy development and implementation, and environmental services. We provide senior level expertise to help our clients navigate through the complex maze of environmental regulations and regulatory compliance required for projects across the energy sector. Our clients are diverse and represent several market segments: power generation (e.g., solar, wind, gas), pipelines, electrical transmission/distribution, municipal, and oil and gas.

Job description
Reporting to the Manager of Environment, the ideal candidate will employ their knowledge of the Alberta Wetland Policy and its associated directives and tools; wetland regulations, delineation, classification, and mitigation; and Water Act regulatory submissions to provide support to our team in the development of projects across a variety of sectors (e.g., renewables, electric transmission, oil and gas). They will assist project teams in identifying wetlands, completing field studies, developing appropriate mitigations, and preparing relevant wetland notifications and applications for submission to provincial regulators.
The ideal candidate will have a great attitude, a willingness to grow as a professional, and will jump right in to contribute to our continued internal and external growth.
Core qualifications
- Qualified Authenticating Wetland Professional designation in the field of wetland science in Alberta.
- Strong working knowledge of provincial (wetland) regulatory regime.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize work.
- Effectively communicate wetland requirements to diverse project teams and clients.
- Team-oriented and suited to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Self-directed and able to work independently.
The preferred candidate will have the following attributes to support our team and our clients:
- Experience in applying wetland regulations to various energy-sector and municipal projects, with priority given to experience in electrical transmission/distribution, pipelines, and renewable energy.
- Experience completing vegetation and rare plant surveys.
- Working knowledge of the wetland regulatory regime in other jurisdictions in western Canada.
- Sense of initiative, with an open-minded approach to participating in different types of projects, tasks, and responsibilities associated with a growing business.
- An unwavering commitment to health and safety.
- Support the drafting, review, authentication/professional sign-off, and submission of regulatory applications and associated technical reports to regulators.
- Review and contribute to technical documents and other project deliverables in relation to achieving regulatory compliance.
- Conduct regulatory consultation and provide wetland regulatory advice to internal teams and proponent-company representatives.
- Monitor and interpret changes in applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in developing wetland regulatory strategies for planning and permitting, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory approvals.
- Conduct desktop and field-based wetland assessments.
- Support knowledge transfer and training of staff.
- Collaborate with staff across the company and externally in completing deliverables.
- Deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic working environment.
- Complete required corporate operation and administrative activities (time entry, expense submissions, invoicing, reporting, etc.) as required, in a timely manner.

Compensation package
Maskwa offers a competitive salary and benefit package. Salary will reflect years of applicable experience and is expected to be $110,000 to $150,000 per year.
Location
This is a full-time position, preferably based out of our Calgary office located at 140 10 Avenue SE or the Edmonton field office located at 5208 82 Avenue NW. Within this role, travel throughout Alberta will occasionally be required. Remote work will be considered for certain candidates.
