As a shared position between the GRRB and the GLUPB, the purpose is a focus on forest management and consideration of the ecological integrity of the region that applies to each board’s mandate within the integrated resource management system under the GCLCA. The work of the GRRB is essential to inform the GLUPB land use planning process, so the foundational work under this position has significant overlap and is a prime opportunity for collaborative staffing.
This pivotal role involves integrating ecological science with practical applications to promote forest health, biodiversity, and sustainable management practices. Specifically, this will be achieved by:
- The administration of forestry management programs and research projects for the Gwich’in Settlement Area (GSA);
- Liaising with and providing technical advice for co-management partners and the public;
- Improving awareness of forestry management, forest ecosystems and biodiversity in the GSA through increased communication, meetings, management plans; and
- Identifying needed research projects.
