The Opportunity

McElhanney is seeking a Wetland Biologist to join our Environmental team. This role can be based at any of our Alberta offices, offering flexibility and the opportunity to support projects across the province. You will play a key role in wetland identification, classification, regulatory approvals, and ecological assessments across the province. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys both fieldwork and technical reporting and thrives in a multidisciplinary consulting environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct wetland delineations and classifications following the Alberta Wetland Classification System (AWCS).  
  • Prepare Wetland Assessment & Impact Reports (WAIRs) and support Water Act approval applications. 
  • Complete vegetation and ecological community survey. 
  • Support construction environmental monitoring and compliance documentation. 
  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, GIS specialists, and other biologists on integrated project teams. 
  • Engage with clients, regulators (AEP/DES), municipalities, and Indigenous communities. 
  • Assist with proposal writing, project scoping, and client communication.

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.  
  • 5-10 years of experience in wetland science, preferably in Alberta. 
  • Eligibility for or registration as P.Biol. with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB). 
  • Strong understanding of Alberta Water Act, AWCS, and provincial wetland policy. 
  • Experience preparing WAIRs and supporting regulatory submissions. 
  • Strong technical writing and data management skills. 
  • Ability to work in remote field conditions and travel throughout Alberta. 
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $85,000 – $125,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
