Intermediate/Senior Environmental Professional

Spencer Environmental Management Services Ltd., with over 40 years of experience supporting project design, construction, and operation, is seeking a skilled Senior or Intermediate Environmental Professional with strong project management capabilities. This pivotal role leads environmental projects from initiation through execution and close-out, supporting technical, financial, health and safety, and regulatory functions. The successful candidate will ensure organizational efficiency by managing project deliverables, budgets, timelines, and resources, while fostering collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams. Success in this position is defined by maintaining seamless project operations, ensuring timely and accurate completion of technical and compliance tasks, and proactively enhancing project processes and information management. The role emphasizes leadership, coordination, documentation, and technical support.

Job Details:

  • permanent, full-time (typically 40 hours/week with flexibility to respond to dynamic project needs)
  • based in Edmonton (required)
  • occasional, short-term travel to project sites throughout Alberta may be required
  • start date to be negotiated with successful candidate

Key Responsibilities:

  • lead and manage environmental projects from initiation through execution and close-out
  • oversee field programs, prepare reports, and other deliverables with multi-disciplinary teams (e.g., wetlands, wildlife, vegetation, fisheries, etc.)
  • monitor and manage project budgets, timelines, resources, and scope
  • collaborate with clients, subconsultants, and regulatory agencies to facilitate project success
  • identify and mitigate risks, maintain quality assurance, and maintain client satisfaction
  • support team members in prioritizing workloads and meeting deadlines
  • facilitate project kick-off and close-out meetings, and track project performance against goals

Demonstrated Skills:

  • advanced technical skills in environmental assessment and management, such as: wildlife habitat evaluation and monitoring, fisheries assessment, aquatic ecosystem studies, wetland delineation/classification, vegetation surveys, ecological mapping, soil and water quality analysis, and/or permitting for environmental projects
  • experience designing and implementing field programs in diverse ecological settings
  • ability to synthesize complex technical data into clear, actionable recommendations for clients and stakeholders
  • proficiency in preparing technical reports, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory submissions
  • strategic and organized with strong attention to detail;
  • excellent interpersonal and client-relations skills;
  • confidence in making informed decisions and prioritizing tasks;
  • proven ability to adapt to changing project demands;
  • capable of mentoring and guiding junior staff;
  • collaborative mindset with a strong desire to contribute to a science-based, team-oriented culture.

Qualifications:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. with over 7 years of professional experience (equivalencies will be considered);
  • eligible to work in Canada (i.e., Canadian citizen, Canadian permanent resident);
  • professional accreditation or eligibility to register;
  • eligible to hold a valid Class 5 driver’s license, with no restrictions;
  • knowledgeable about Alberta landscapes and ecological regions;
  • experience working independently in field settings;
  • strong desire to contribute to science-based environmental management and successful project delivery as an integrated team member.
