Junior/Intermediate Agrologist – Permanent Full Time
Alberta Conservation Association - Lethbridge
Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) is looking for a highly motivated, team-orientated professional with strong interpersonal skills. Our program focuses on voluntary collaboration with producers and other landowners to enhance and maintain habitat for a range of wildlife species. This is a full-time, permanent position with the Land Management Resource Program based out of our South Region Office in Lethbridge.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
You will work closely with team members to design and conduct detailed range transects (inventories), range health and tamed pasture assessments, and develop comprehensive habitat plans alongside producers and land managers. You understand prairie ecosystems, and the challenges associated with balancing the needs of farming, ranching and wildlife together on one landscape. Your ability to synthesize and balance these needs enables you to design practical and adaptive management plans to meet multiple goals. You understand the common habitat needs of ground nesting birds (waterfowl, grouse, pheasants, and songbirds) ungulates, and amphibians and have a passion for enhancing their abundance.
You understand the trade-offs associated with grazing strategies and ideally have a working knowledge of common practices on crop land as well. You have experience and/or a strong understanding of grassland inventories, detailed range assessments, strong plant identification skills (grasses, shrubs, and forbs); and understand the key elements affecting riparian health. You will use your understanding and background with rural communities to build long-term working relationships with producers and project partners. You understand the needs and stresses faced by rural economies, enabling you to engage effectively with local stakeholders. You have a practical down-to-earth approach that enables you to relate to non-biologists and empathize with local views. You are comfortable speaking in front of groups and welcome the opportunity to participate in local events.
While your primary focus will be on range management and producer collaboration, you are a versatile team player who enjoys variety in the field. You will have the opportunity to broaden your impact by participating in other wildlife projects as assigned, which may include assisting with biodiversity surveys, species-specific monitoring, or habitat restoration efforts across the region. This flexibility allows you to contribute your expertise to a diverse array of conservation initiatives while supporting the broader goals of the ACA team.
