Bird ID Workshop - Day 2 only option (Sunday May 28th)

Date:              Friday June 2nd, 2017 &  Sunday June 4th

Time:              Friday June 2:  Classroom session from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Optional walk at Carburn Park - 7:30 pm

                           Sunday June 4: Meet at Weaselhead Parking lot 5:30 am

Location:     The Kahanoff Conference Centre

                             2nd Floor

                             105 - 12th Avenue SE

                             Calgary

CCP:                This course qualifies ASPB members to earn 12 Professional Development Hours towards their CCP requirements.

 

Since the day 1 option of the Bird ID has sold out, we thought we would offer Day 2, as there is still room. If you registered for Day 1, and would like to also attend Day 2 please call or email the office to adjust your registration.

 

Food:              

Please bring your own snacks, lunch, and fluids for the field trip. There will NOT be opportunities to purchase food throughout the day. Dinner will be provided on day 1, so please indicate if you have any food restrictions.

What to Wear:     

We will be going on the field trip rain or shine so bring clothes that can protect you from rain, sun, and wind. We    will  be walking on trails for several kilometres at each location so make sure your footwear is appropriate for dealing with puddles, wet grass, mud, etc. Rubber boots are not necessary.

What to Bring:         

Everyone should bring binoculars and a notebook. If you have access to a spotting scope and a field guide, please bring them too. We'll have a selection of field guides, some spotting scopes, and a few extra pairs of binoculars. We recommend bringing sunscreen and bug repellent.

Both novice and experienced birders will benefit from this workshop which focuses on bird identification. Participants will learn basic bird identification techniques for a wide variety of species found in southern Alberta.

Day 2 of Bird Id Workshop: Sun

1.        Meet at Weaselhead Parking lot (sunrise is 5:30am) – 5:00am
2.        Drive to Brown Lowery PP (60 min) - including a quick stop for Bobolink
3.        Brown Lowery (2 hours)
4.        Drive to Barrier Lake (1 hr 15 min)
5.        Barrier Lake (2 hours)
6.        Drive to Flowering Water Trail (15 min)
7.        Flowering Water Trail (2 hours)
8.        Drive to Weaselhead (1 hour)

 

Biography

Nick Bartok: Nick has worked on many avian projects across North America, including: secretive marsh bird surveys along the Lower Colorado River of southwest Arizona, Burrowing Owl research at the Salton Sea in Southern California, and bird banding in Ontario, Arizona, Oregon, California, British Columbia, Costa Rica, and Belize. Currently, he is working for Western Ecosystems Technology (WEST), based in Calgary, as a wildlife biologist / team lead.
