Summary

Accurate fish species identification is of critical importance in fisheries biology. In this introductory course, students will learn key morphological identification characteristics, provincial range, and habitat preferences of Alberta fish species. This workshop offers a range of knowledge from junior to senior level fisheries personnel.

Materials:  Course materials will be provided; however, field guides are an extra cost ($45) purchasable from the presenter

Agenda:

•    Introductions and Identification Quiz (compare ID skills before and after the workshop) (~0.5 hrs.)
•    Presentation and class discussion on the following topics (~1.25 hrs.):
                      key morphological characteristics                                                  
                      fish anatomy                                                                          
                      photography and handling techniques
                      provincial range and provincial and federally listed species
•    Preserved sample identification using a variety of established identification keys in a classroom setting, final identification quiz (~1.25 hrs.)

Presenter Biography:

Shona is a graduate of the NAIT- Renewable Resources and University of Alberta - Conservation Biology programs. She has provided field knowledge and educational teaching over the past 15 years. With the help of many consultants, Alberta Environment and Parks, Universities, Trout Unlimited Canada and friends, this fish identification workshop has provided great interest throughout the fisheries community.
