                        Day 3: Monday, March 11th, 2019 8:30 am - 4 pm - Software and Analysis

Location:         Room 201, The Kahanoff Centre – 105 12th Ave SE, Calgary AB T2G 1A1

Requirements:  Need to attend in person. Bring your own laptop, charge cable, and headphones. Need to download Audacity onto your laptop (free online) prior to course. Download instructions will be included on sign-up email.

Materials:         Datasets will be provided. Equipment (SM4FSBat, AudioMoth, SPL meter, multimeter, etc.) will be available for use during practical demonstrations. Email instructor here if you have questions regarding specific equipment.

Summary

Automated recording technology and software has grown immensely in usability and popularity in the last decade. Many biologists are attracted to the field by the boon in data gathering for reduced logistical cost,  collection of data without interference of an observer, the ability to revisit field data and increased safety while surveying in remote areas or at night. Even with the recent improvements, bioacoustical surveys can seem intimidating with the initial cost of purchase and potential for recording failure. The main goal of this course is to provide wildlife practitioners, and project, environmental, and regulatory managers a familiarity with available technology, techniques, and assessment capabilities so they can confidently make decisions on when and how to implement bioacoustical surveys. We will discuss acoustics physics and animal communication to fill in knowledge gaps. Also, we review the current state of regulation and available resources for bioacousticians. Finally this course will include 2 days familiarizing practitioners with use and maintenance of equipment and software with variety of price points and utilities.

Presenter Biography 

Tyne has been digitally eavesdropping on animals for over 9 years. She is an independent environmental consultant and wildlife biologist. Her Masters in Behavioural Ecology from the University of Windsor focused on Animal Communication. Through her career Tyne has developed acoustic monitoring programs for academics, NGOs and industry. She has extensive experience designing biodiversity monitoring surveys and analyzing acoustic data.  Her work as a consultant has ranged from local to international projects with her primary experience based in Western Canada. Tyne has taught students, professors, and consulting professionals how to understand and effectively use audio and visual technology in their own projects. As the owner of A/Vian Ecological Consulting her primary goal is to help organizations implement audio/visual monitoring technology in a scientifically rigorous and practical way to improve data collection, spatial and temporal coverage, surveyor safety, and logistical costs.
