Fish of Alberta - Identification Course - CALGARY

Accurate fish species identification is of critical importance in fisheries biology for researchers, government, non-profit organizations and environmental consultants alike. This is particularly true for provincially and federally-listed fish species. In this introductory course students will learn key morphological characteristics, provincial range, and habitat preferences of Alberta sport and non-sport fish species.

Summary

In this introductory course students will learn key morphological characteristics, provincial range, and habitat preferences of Alberta sport and non-sport fish species. Techniques on correct sample preservation, field photography, and fish handling will also be discussed. The course also provides an opportunity to observe and handle real preserved specimens to learn the key identification features of different species.

Topics could include:

  • Key morphological characteristics and fish anatomy
  • Provincial range and habitat preferences
  • Fish collection, handling, photography and preservation techniques
  • Fish Research Licenses for fish sampling and the use of the provincial online fisheries database

Presenter Biography 

Shona Derlukewich graduated from NAIT Renewable Resources Program in 2005. She has provided field knowledge and educational teaching in the consulting industry at Golder Associates, Matrix Solutions and Stantec. Consulting over the past nine years as a fisheries technician and biologist, Shona travelled to various places throughout Alberta, NWT, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, which sparked a passion for fish identification and education. With the help of many consultants, government and friends, this fish identification course has provided great interest throughout the fisheries community. Shona notes: “I am very excited to present this course and educate technologists and biologists across the province. Together we can provide mentorship, education and awareness to reignite the passions in future fisheries biologists”.
