Summary

While work is being done to protect the plant bio-diversity of the Prairie Grasslands, the Foothills/Parkland eco-regions are home to a wide variety of edible and medicinal plants. Very few landscapes are unaffected by colonization and almost all have been altered by human impact. Yet there are many uses, both edible and medicinal, for introduced species, in addition to the native species of herbaceous plants that live here. Learn some of the many species that grow from the Calgary area west and south and how to use them. From tea, to afterbite, making cordage and a sautéed feast, our native plants have played a huge role in human relations over the centuries.

Please bring your “go mug” as foraged tea samples will be available for your enjoyment.

Presenter's Biography

This Edible and Medicinal plant talk will be given by Julie Walker, owner of Full Circle Adventures.

Julie is an Interpretive Guides Association (IGA) certified professional hiking guide and nature educator. She has interpreted nature to elders, kids and adults in Southern Alberta for more than 25 years. Julie has explored the plants of the Prairie, Foothills, Montane, Sub-Alpine and Alpine eco-regions. Sharing her knowledge about this flora, especially the edible plants, has become her passion. She has worked with the SAIT culinary school, Alberta Culinary and Tourism Association, Rouge restaurant, River Cafe, the Light Cellar and more.

Julie has a high conservation and cultural ethic. Her big goal is to inspire everyday people to preserve our intact wildlands for their food and medicine value. By learning about the edible understory and how to cook with them and re-wild our gardens, we can have a better balance of health and wealth and play a part in re-balancing nature, right in our backyards!
