Temporary Withdrawn and Associated Biologist

The Temporary Withdrawn Biologist category allow for members to temporarily withdraw from practice and pay a lower registration fee, for a period of up to two years. Many registrants apply for this status while on parental leave or out of the work force. During this time, P.Biol.'s are not required to fulfill Continued Competency Requirements. The two year period begins upon approval of an application to reclassify to Temporary Withdrawn. You can apply for free from your dashboard and applications are generally approved within three business days. Temporary Withdrawn Biologists may not use their title (such as Professional Biologist or P. Biol.) during the time they are on Temporary Withdrawn status and must pay the applicable temporary withdrawn membership fees as outlined on the Membership Fees page.

Within the two year period, Temporary Withdrawn Biologists in good standing can submit a free application to be reinstated to their original category. Applications are generally approved within three to five business days. A Temporary Withdrawn Biologist who does not apply for re-classification back to their original category when the two-year period ends will automatically be reclassified as an Associated Biologist

The Associated Biologist category is generally for retired members or those whose careers have taken them in other directions, or members taking an extended break. There is no window for how long a member can remain in the Associated Biologist Category. An Associated member also may no longer use their title (such as Professional Biologist or P. Biol.), and Associated members do not have a vote in the Society. If they wish to return to professional status, they may apply for reclassification back to their original category. Please see the table below for requirements for an Associated Biologist to Return to a P. Biol.

Members who desire to renew (reclassify during the renewal period) as Temporary Withdrawn, must apply through the portal to reclassify to Temporary Withdrawn, be approved, and pay the Temporary Withdrawn renewal fee. The submission of outstanding CCP is required to reclassify for Professional Biologists. As of first of the new registration year (January 1), applications must include a declaration the stamp or the title of Professional Biologist has not been used since the registration year recently expired (December 31.) For example, on January 1, 2022, the declaration must state the stamp and title have not been used since December 31, 2021. Applying for reclassification does not affect the application of the late renewal fee (1 March) or change the cancellation date for non-payment of fees (30 April.) Approved applicants that do not pay the  Temporary Withdrawn renewal fee by the deadline will also be canceled from the Roster.

DO NOT PAY THE RENEWAL FEE FOR YOUR CURRENT CATEGORY IF YOU WISH TO RENEW AS TEMPORARY WITHDRAWN. Apply to reclassify per the above directions. Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
