Introductory Bird Identification Workshop

Both novice and experienced birders will benefit from this workshop which focuses on bird identification. Participants will learn basic bird identification techniques for a wide variety of species found in southern Alberta.

Presenters:       Nick Bartok P. Biol. and Dan Arndt BIT

Dates and times:       Friday May 27:  Classroom session from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Optional walk at Carburn Park - 7:30 pm 

                                               Saturday May 28:  Field trip from 5:30 am - 3:30 pm.

Locations:   The classroom portion will be held at the Tetra Tech office located in Riverbend at 115-200 Rivercrest Drive SE, Calgary.

                               The field trip day will begin at Weaselhead Natural Area. More information below.

CCP:                This course qualifies ASPB members to earn 12 Professional Development Hours towards their CCP requirements.

Food: Please bring your own snacks, lunch, and fluids for the field trip. There will NOT be opportunities to purchase food throughout the day.

What to Wear: We will be going on the field trip rain or shine so bring clothes that can protect you from rain, sun, and wind. We will be walking on trails for several kilometres at each location so make sure your footwear is appropriate for dealing with puddles, wet grass, mud, etc.

What to Bring: Everyone should bring binoculars and a notebook. If you have access to a spotting scope and a field guide, please bring them too. We'll have a selection of field guides, some spotting scopes, and a few extra pairs of binoculars. We recommend bringing sunscreen and bug repellent.

Presenter Biographies:

Nick Bartok: Nick has worked on many avian projects across North America, including: secretive marsh bird surveys along the Lower Colorado River of southwest Arizona, Burrowing Owl research at the Salton Sea in Southern California, and bird banding in Ontario, Arizona, Oregon, California, British Columbia, and Costa Rica. Currently, he is working for Tetra Tech, based in Calgary, as a wildlife biologist / team lead.

Daniel Arndt: Dan has worked on a number of avian projects in Canada and birded throughout the Western U.S., Canada, Cuba, and Mexico. Over the last 7 years, he has developed a keen familiarity with the birds of Southern Alberta and the boreal region, and is a primary editor for the Birds Calgary blog (www.birdscalgary.com). He is currently a leader for the Friends of Fish Creek Bird Identification course, leads private birding and wildlife tours, and is working for SGS Canada Inc., based in Fort McMurray, as a wildlife biologist/crew lead.
