Ammendments to SARA - Schedule 1

On Saturday, February 20, 2021, a proposal to amend Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) for 17 terrestrial species was published in part I of the Canada Gazette. The proposal can be found on the Species at Risk Registry at: https://canadagazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p1/2021/2021-02-20/html/reg1-eng.html

This marks the beginning of a 30-day public comment period during which you can share your comments on the proposal either by writing to [email protected]  or calling 1 800 668-6767. The public comment period will end on Monday, March 22, 2021.

The Minister of the Environment will take into consideration comments and any additional information received following this publication and make a listing recommendation for each species to the Governor in Council. After species are listed, recovery strategies must be published within one year for endangered species and within two years for threatened species.

Species proposed for addition to Schedule 1 of SARA

•       Eastern Banded Tigersnail (endangered)

•       Golden-eye Lichen – Great Lakes population (endangered)

•       Unisexual Ambystoma – Small-mouthed Salamander dependent population (endangered)

•       Unisexual Ambystoma – Jefferson Salamander dependent population (endangered)

•       Lake Huron Grasshopper (threatened)

•       Bullsnake (special concern)

•       Caribou – Newfoundland population (special concern)

•       Golden-eye Lichen – Prairie/Boreal population (special concern)

•       Long’s Bulrush (special concern)

•       Magdalen Islands Grasshopper (special concern)

•       Transverse Lady Beetle (special concern)

 

Species proposed for reclassification to Schedule 1 of SARA

•       Blanding’s Turtle - Great Lakes/St. Lawrence population (from threatened to endangered)

•       Spotted Wintergreen (from endangered to threatened)

•       Western Painted Turtle – Pacific Coast population (from endangered to threatened)

•       Rusty Cord-moss (from endangered to special concern)

•       Anticosti Aster (from threatened to special concern)

 

Species proposed to be removed from Schedule 1

•       Sonora Skipper (from special concern to not at risk)
